THESE residents of the Changegate area of Haworth held their victory street party on September 9, 1945 – the 76th to be recorded by George A Shore, who combined photography with a carpet and linoleum store in Keighley Market and who recognised a golden opportunity for selling prints.
At the time Haworth was hosting a Peace Celebration Week, with bonfires and fireworks, dancing and an open air service in the park, and 400 "elderly folks" were entertained to tea. Prizes were awarded for the best street decorations, which may account for the large Union Flag seen here.
Highlight was an ambitious historical pageant called The Victor's Crown: The Story of Our Motherland, produced by the curator of the Bronte Museum, its characters ranging from Father Time, John Bull and Florence Nightingale to Young and Old England, plus tableaux representing 'Our Colonial Empire'.
