A worker with Keighley drug and alcohol agency Project 6 has been chosen to carry the Olympic torch.

Donna Siberry was chosen in honour of the amount of charity fundraising she has done through running marathons.

The nomination from her husband’s grandmother also cited her work supporting recovering addicts through Project 6.

Donna, 36, who lives in Sowerby Bridge, will carry the London 2012 torch through Dewsbury on June 25.

Many of the torchbearers – including Keighley woman Lynn Williams – will do their runs in towns other than their own.

Donna said the invitation to carry the torch came as a complete surprise, after her nan-in-law picked up a nomination form in Morrisons.

She said: “Part of it was to do with me doing a lot of running and events for charity, and that I’ve worked for a number of years with Project 6.”

Donna began with the long-established agency in 2008, helping people with drug and alcohol problems in GP surgeries.

She recently became the charity’s volunteer manager, responsible for finding voluntary work for people in recovery.

She spearheads Project 6’s major initiative to help people get back into the community and employment after successfully fighting drug or alcohol problems.

Donna took up running in 2004, completing the half-marathon Great North Run, and said she had been “running like Forrest Gump” ever since.

She has since run marathons in Florence, Paris, Edinburgh and Dublin, and this month will compete in the London Marathon.

Donna usually runs with friends Tracey Willcocks and Janet Tolley, who are together known as Team Velvet after the name of an assistance dog belonging to Tracey’s daughter.

The trio is currently running marathons to raise money for Dogs for the Disabled, which provides such animals.
