A former Keighley Cougar Cubs star has been tipped for the top after signing a deal with Bradford Bulls.

Ross Knowles, from Oakworth, was among the recent crop of 11 players recruited by the Super League club to join their academy system.

Able to play centre, stand-off and full back, Knowles has represented the Cubs for four years and long-term coach Derek Whitehead is certain he will be a success.

“It’s the first rung on a steep ladder to becoming a full-time Super League player,” said Whitehead, current coach of Keighley’s Under-17s. “But Ross is committed to working very hard to try and achieve his ambition and, based on his unreserved dedication over the last four years with us, I am sure he will rise to all challenges placed in front of him.

“On behalf of our club sponsor, KG Motoquip in Keighley, team members and coaching staff we wish him all the very best for the future.”

Whitehead first noticed Knowles at the age of 12, while he was playing for Oakbank School.

He progressed to earn selection for the Keighley Coug-ar Scholarship and the Bradford and Keighley Service Area at the age of 14 before being invited to join the Bulls’ scholarship scheme and then earning a junior contract.
