TYPICAL of many enthusiastic chapel teams after the Second World War, the Knowle Park Congregational Church Cricket Club won the Keighley and District Charity Cup in 1950.
This photograph has been supplied by the Rev Brenda Sugden, formerly of Keighley, who also recalls the names.
On the back row, from left, stand Dennis Simpson, Joe Caley, church secretary John Sugden, Ernest Gostling, Berry Smith, Harry Whitely, Ernest Whitfield, Harold Sorton and Richard Lambert.
Seated in the middle are Frank Sugden, president Ernest T Dewhirst, captain Smith Brigg and the Rev G Claude Thomas. Jack Chadwick and Tom Draper sit at the front.
Such clubs were about more than cricket.
“During the years of its existence, playing successes have been achieved,” observed the Knowle Park entry in the 1953 jubilee handbook of the West Bradford Cricket League, “but there is no doubt that the greatest success has been the development and maintenance of a fine spirit of fellowship.
“Social activities during the winter months have been highlights. Concerts and pantomimes have been more than fundraising efforts, and have provided a store of most happy memories.”
