WHEN HER Royal Highness and Princess Royal visited Keighley during fundraising Wings for Victory Week in 1943, her itinerary included the Woodbine Day Nursery in Skipton Road, which catered for the children of mothers on war work.
Here she stands on the right of matron Miss Empey and Mayoress Mrs Tom Snowdon, in the nursery garden where 47 children are having tea, wearing sun bonnets made by this staff specially for the occasion.
Two little girls, Molly Kelly and Joyce Akeroyd, would present her with a bouquet of sweet peas.
Keighley’s total contribution to the war effort that week amounted to £1,453,147.
