THE merger proposals announced by Asda and Sainsbury’s have, understandably, sparked considerable anxiety in the town.
Official statements emanating from the companies have sought to reassure people that there are ‘no plans’ to close stores.
But such words will do little to allay fears.
It makes no sense at all for one operation to have two supermarkets sat side by side, with just a railway line separating them.
So you can fully understand people’s concerns.
The loss of either store to the town would have a strong impact, and is the last thing Keighley wants or needs especially so soon after the departure of Marks & Spencer.
Our overriding thoughts through all this must be with the staff.
This uncertainty will create only worry for them.
It’s imperative that if the proposal does progress, their welfare and interests should be central in whatever happens.
People’s lives and livelihoods are at stake.
