The Legend of King Arthur is this year’s family adventure staged at York Theatre Royal.

Arthurian legends are brought to life on stage with live music, sword fights and sorcery until August 31.

Audiences will discover how Arthur was given his powerful sword, Excalibur, by the Lady of the Lake. They will meet Merlin the wizard, Arthur’s trusted teacher and friend, and there will be love between brave Lancelot and Queen Guinevere.

Then, in a show from the team behind York’s mega-success The Railway Children, it’s on to the battle that will bring an end to the treasured realm of Camelot.

The play, written by Mike Kenny, is supported by all-day free activities, including jousting to hit a target, stocks with sponges, games and stories.

The Theatre Royal presents a new production of the popular 1940s British Comedy, See How They Run, from September 20 to October 12. The family-friendly farce, described as frantic and hilarious, begins as war is about to break out in the frightfully English village of Morton-cum-Middlewick.

The conflict here is mostly about the harvest festival decorations, until an escaped German prisoner of war descends on the vicarage. He gets mixed up with a high-powered bishop, handsome actor, a curtain-twitching neighbour and several dog-collared clerics.

The Boy Who Cried Wolf, also written by Mike Kenny, features an ensemble of actor-musicians from September 26 to October 12.

Acclaimed companies Pilot Theatre and Slung Low team up with York Theatre Royal to present Blood and Chocolate from October 3 to 20.

The “epic and cinematic” production will take place across the city,s streets, with a cast of more than 200 people.

The audience will watch events unfold in and around some of York’s landmark buildings, while listening to characters’ conversations via headphones.

The production will celebrate the stories of York’s chocolate industry, from workers to factory owners, as well as young men who give their lives to defend their country.
