Children from across Kirklees will perform Mark Ravenhill’s play Totally Over You in Huddersfield next week.

The play follows Kitty and her friends, who want fame and fortune and think they know exactly how to get it.

They don’t even have to be talented, all they have to do is dump their zitty boyfriends and marry celebrities.

The heartbroken boyfriends are keen to show the girls the error of their ways, so they form the next boy band sensation Awesome.

Totally Over You started life in 2003 when leading TV and theatre writer Ravenhill was asked to write a play for the National Theatre Connections Programme.

The programme commissions plays specifically for young people across the UK to perform.

Ravehill took inspiration from Molière’s Les Précieuses Ridicules for his comedic tale centring on society’s obsession with the superficial world of celebrity.

The cast, who are aged 11 to 20, are drawn from the Lawrence Batley Theatre’s youth theatre and the theatre’s community projects.

Ciara Ward, 15, who plays Kitty, said: “The idea of a group of people working towards a mutual goal is so inspiring.”

Totally Over You is performed from August 15-17 at 7.30pm at the Lawrence Batley Theatre. Visit thelbt.org or call 01484 430528 for further information.
