The owner of a Keighley live music venue is looking forward to an exciting new season of entertainment.
The Exchange Arts Centre in Russell Street has been closed for refurbishment for part of the summer, but will be back in action from Tuesday, September 3, with an open mic night. The centre is run by Jym Harris, who said it has been doing well since it opened more than a year ago.
“I’ve been doing gigs in Keighley for ten years and already had a good understanding of the local music scene, so it wasn’t difficult to attract people here,” he said.
“We have all sorts of music performed – country, folk, metal, indie, tribute bands. The idea has always been to be a venue open to everyone.
“When we first set up, we got a licence to allow under-14s to perform, as long as they are accompanied by an adult, and we do try to cater for both the young and old crowds.”
He added the centre has hosted acts from all over the world, including bands from the USA, Venezuela and Germany, as well as groups from across the UK.
“I get regular e-mails from bands wanting to play Keighley,” he said.
“Attendances can vary depending on the event, but generally the turnouts are pretty good, which is why bands from elsewhere like coming to Keighley.”
From September 13 to 16, the centre will host a beer festival, which will also feature music, comedy and a selection of at least 20 types of gin.
Surrealist comedian Charlie Chuck will be at Exchange Arts on September 20. He entered the mainstream with his appearances on The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, and has been touring the stand-up circuit ever since.
