There’s not just the obvious on offer at the Great Northern’s first blues night.
Punters can also expect ragtime and old-time music from the duo Gerry Cooper and Phil Snell.
The experienced musicians teamed up in 2010 to play their own songs on guitars, mandolin, fiddle and harmonica. They had known each other for quite a few years and initially got together just for fun.
A well-received debut at the Otley Folk Festival led to the duo becoming more serious. Both men continue their solo and other band projects, and Phil produced Gerry’s latest CD Follow The River in his Otley studio.
Support will come from Ben Blue Waters, organiser and compere of the Great Northern’s new monthly blues and rock night. Ben plays acoustic slide guitar in the Delta blues style, with his repertoire containing originals and blues classics from the 1920s to the present day.
Ben has been playing music since the 1970s, both solo and in bands, performing various genres from R&B and to punk and avant-garde.
Blues gigs at the Great Northern in Halifax Road, Ingrow, will continue on October 4 with gritty two-guitar-and-harmonica duo Urban Bluesmen and Leeds folk/blues band Palooka.
Ben said: “Our aim is to provide audiences with the best acoustic blues, roots and traditional music of all kinds that Yorkshire has to offer.”
