A man dubbed the world’s most adventurous cellist will perform at East Riddlesden Hall later this month.
Matthew Barley will be at the 17th century manor house as part of his 100-concert Around Britten tour that began in January.
Matthew is celebrating Benjamin Britten’s centenary year by taking the British composer’s music to all corners of the UK.
So far he has performed in castles, a lighthouse, a barn in Colchester, a farm in Cumbria and a cave in Derbyshire.
The concerts feature new music alongside that of Britten and JS Bach, and the presentation includes films and computer technology.
Matthew, the music director of BBC2’s Classical Star, promises a fascinating and intriguing show that will include Britten’s powerful Third Cello Suite and a Bach suite that greatly inspired Britten.
There will be solo cello music by Tavener and specially-commissioned new works by Dai Fujikura, James MacMillan and DJ Jan Bang.
Matthew said: “This tour combines many of the things I love in music: core repertoire, commissions, multi-media work, education and looking for new ways and places to present great music.
“It is a great odyssey, travelling throughout the land with such a wonderful programme, meeting so many people who would not normally hear this music.
“The tour is conceived very much in the spirit of Britten; his inclusivity, his search for new forms of expression and his dreams for musical community.”
Tickets for the 7.30pm concert on October 10 cost £19. Visit nationaltrust.org.uk or call 0844 2491895 for further information.
