Haworth’s Sarah Hutton is working as the artist-in-residence on the Settle-Carlisle Railway.
She is visiting every station along the Yorkshire Dales line, as well as working on Northern Rail trains. She hopes to produce a body of work that captures the beauty of the line’s buildings, its evocative setting and the people who work and travel along it.
Sarah met many residents and visitors while hosting a one-day pop-up studio at Settle Station last month. She talked to people about her project and showed some of her work-in-progress.
Sarah studied fine art painting at Central School in London and Syracuse University in New York. She works from studios in Haworth and Giggleswick, and exhibits both nationally and internationally.
As well as exploring the buildings and landscape, Sarah is keen to meet passengers on the trains, volunteers, conductors, drivers and other railway workers. Sarah will devote the next year to the project, and is being supported by the Settle-Carlisle Railway Development Company and Northern Rail.
