York Military Wives – Haworth Parish Church
The church was packed to capacity as 350 people enjoyed the 19 ladies of this fine choir, conducted by Ruth Sladden.
They performed a rich variety of songs in unison, two, three and four-part harmony, with great musicality and sincerity. There were patriotic songs, songs from the shows and standard classics. We were treated to two excellent solos accompanied by the choir, and were invited to join in with I Vow To Thee My Country and Parry’s Jerusalem. Several of the ladies came forward and gave individual testimonies about the choir and what it meant to them. These were very moving and inspiring. Some of their husbands were away on military duties in different parts of the world. Perhaps the only downside was the choir’s use of recorded accompaniments. This robs the conductor of rubato and full control, except in the a capella items.
Obviously, that is how they rehearsed. Good accompanists are a very rare breed.
The concert was conceived, organised and arranged by Nikki Carroll, of Firth’s Boutique in Haworth. A cheque for £18,707 was presented to the military charity SSAFA during the concert.
