Priscilla Queen of the Desert – Bradford Alhambra

Priscilla Queen of the Desert has followed the path of many cult classics and turned from screen to stage – and what an impact she has made, sparkles and all!

Priscilla tells the story of three drag queens setting off across Australia in a battered bus and the people and prejudices they meet along the way.

Jason Donovan played the role of Tick/Mitzi in a commendable fashion, portraying the inner turmoil of the drag queen who has to reveal to his fellow travellers that not only was he once married but that he also has a son. Although he adds life in to the big sparkly numbers, I did feel that with some of the slower numbers, Donovan was slightly careful.

Star of the show undoubtedly had to be Richard Grieve, who played the role of Bernadette. Easily as good as Terence Stamp in the film, Grieve portrayed the character effortlessly. He really came across as a female searching for that one true love, topping it off with a lovely singing voice.

Completing the trio with exuberance was Adam/Felicia played by Graham Weaver. He put the real camp into his drag queen with such a relish you could not help but smile.

A real feelgood musical, but unfortunately my daughter would not let me sing along!
