Two of the 20th century’s biggest musicals come to the Grand Theatre in Leeds this month.

Pop singer and theatre star Marti Pellow will star in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita on May 12-17.

And West Side Story, the dramatic re-staging of Romeo and Juliet in 1950s New York, is performed on May 20-31.

Marti Pellow, who achieved fame in the 1980s with Wet Wet Wet, performed a one-night gig at the Grand last year.

He returns to play Che, the narrator in Evita, while Madalena Alberto plays the title role.

The show portrays Eva Peron’s journey from humble beginnings to extraordinary wealth, power and iconic status as the wife of the Argentine dictator.

The Argentinian people regarded Eva as the spiritual leader of their nation, but cracks began to appear in her reputation before her untimely death.

The show contains well-known songs such as Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, On This Night Of A Thousand Stars, You Must Love Me, and Another Suitcase In Another Hall.

West Side Story changed the course of musical theatre when it opened on Broadway in 1957 and it remains one of the most successful stage shows of all time.

The show comes to Leeds in a production that features the entire original Jerome Robbins choreography.

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story is set on Manhattan’s Upper West Side and explores the rivalry between two teenage gangs.

When Tony falls in love with Maria, the sister of the rival gang’s leader, the feud takes on a new dimension and prompts a fatal journey overshadowed by violence and hatred.

The score includes the famous songs Maria, Tonight, Somewhere, America and I Feel Pretty.
