TOURING theatre company The Jay Walkers has hit the road again with a comedy double bill.
The group will be in Cononley on Saturday, May 7 as part of a tour of Craven venues.
The act one play, Godfrey’s Last Stand, is by award-winning Calderdale playwright Alan Stockdill, who is noted for his work with his own touring company Talking Stock.
And he has loaned the script for Godfrey's Last Stand to The Jay Walkers in the confident knowledge that the standards will be maintained.
It tells the story of Godfrey Shackleton, a cricket umpire in the Yorkshire Dales League for half a century, whose big dream is to officiate an England-Australia match with sidekick Freddie Fitton as his fellow umpire.
His chance comes thanks to a £3.2 million lottery win, but his daughter Donna is definitely not bowled over by the turn of events.
"This feel-good, gentle comedy will really make the audience think about family, forgiveness, responsibilities, hopes and dreams," said the playwright.
The act two play is The Holiday, one of Peter Quilter’s popular Duets, featuring Shelley and Bobby, who take a final holiday together in Torremolinos before their divorce. It provides a insight into the world of love, producing hilarious moments but also great poignancy.
The Jay Walkers were formed in 2009 and tour the local area in spring and autumn. They perform for the convenience and benefit of local communities, using church and village halls as their venue.
The tour started at Grassington's Octagon Theatre last weekend, before moving onto Gargrave Village Hall.
The Jay Walkers will also perform at St Andrew’s Church, Skipton, on Friday May 6, and Cononley Institute on Saturday May 7. Both shows start at 7.30pm.
