WITH THE Academy Awards over for another year I wonder what next year’s nominations will be?
There were some well-deserved winners such as The Shape of Water, Three Billboards and The Darkest Hour (to name a few), all of which we have screened at The Picture House recently.
Starting today at the Picture House is the new and rebooted Tomb Raider (12a). Lara Croft played by Alicia Vikander is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished years earlier.
Hoping to solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance, Croft embarks on a perilous journey to his last-known destination; a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. The stakes couldn’t be higher as Lara must rely on her sharp mind, blind faith and stubborn spirit to venture into the unknown.
With big boots to fill following on from Angelina Jolie as the next Lara Croft, I’m sure Alicia Vikander will do an excellent job of bring this much-loved character back to the big screens after 10 years!
Wrinkle In Time (PG), which is released on March 23, is Disney Studios’ next big film due to hit the big screen. This mystical and magical looking film follows the story of Meg Murry and her little brother, Charles, who have been without their scientist father, Mr. Murry, for five years, ever since he discovered a new planet and used a concept known as a tesseract to travel there.
Joined by Meg’s classmate Calvin O’Keefe and guided by the three mysterious astral travellers known as Mrs Whatsit, Mrs Who and Mrs Which, the children brave a dangerous journey to a planet that possesses all of the evil in the universe.
You may have seen the trailers and posters, and now you don’t have too much longer to wait as the greatly-anticipated Peter Rabbit (PG) which is set for UK release on Friday, March 16. With names we all remember from our childhood, Peter Rabbit and his three sisters, Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-Tail enjoy spending their days in Mr McGregor’s vegetable garden.
When one of McGregor’s relatives suddenly moves in, he’s less than thrilled to discover a family of rabbits in his new home.
A battle of wills soon breaks out as the new owner hatches scheme after scheme to get rid of Peter, a resourceful rabbit who proves to be a worthy opponent.
Our next Keighley Film Club screening is a film called In Between (15).
This is a 2016 Israeli-French film directed by Maysaloun Hamoud, about three Arab-Israeli women who share an apartment in Tel Aviv and try to balance their traditions with the modern world.
The story concerns three Pakistani single women living in Tel Aviv who in different ways attempt to balance issues of faith/tradition with modern living in a way that allows them to shape their own destinies.
Laila is a hard-partying lawyer, Salma a bohemian lesbian DJ and Nour a devout naive Muslim computer scientist. In Between will be screened on Sunday, March 18, and the doors open at 5.35pm.
Lastly our next live broadcast, which is part of the Oscar Wilde Season, will be Lady Windermere’s Fan (12a).
This will shown on March 20, and starts at 7.15pm.
