The Philharmonic in Vienna, the Halle in Bradford, and, last Saturday, the Square Chapel Orchestra in Halifax, all waltzing us into the New Year.

We heard a terrific programme of Viennese music - a Suppe overture, Strauss waltzes and polkas, operatic arias and duets vividly sung by Carol Smith and Sarah Killian, giving much pleasure to the capacity audience.

The Faust Jewel Song was outstanding and Max Benn gave a dazzling performance of Weber's Concertino for Clarinet.

We were even asked by the immensely enthusiastic conductor, Lawrence Killian, to raise our voices to augment Strauss' Egyptian March.

The 42-strong orchestra was on splendidly robust form and we hardly cared about the occasional hiccup and unscheduled pause over which luscious tune came next in Waldteufel's immortal Skaters Waltz.

The Blue Danube was its usual immaculate self and the Thunder and Lightning Polka brought this most enjoyable concert to a thrilling conclusion.
