Steeton Male Voice Choir's 100th birthday bash is going to be a noisy affair.

The 70 singers have invited dozens of mates from other choirs to join them for a grand old sing-song.

And they hope nigh on 2,000 more people will nip down to Bradford to witness the spectacle.

The occasion is the choir's massed male voice choir concert at St Georges Hall on April 26.

The event will be the biggest of several flagship concerts to mark the choir's centenary year.

Joining the Steeton singers will be Nelson Arion, Worcester and K Shoes choirs and the world-renowned YBS brass band. (Correct) The leaders of each choir will take turns to conduct the entire group singing four songs.

These 16 items will include Welsh hymns and well-known pieces from operas and musicals.

They range from Rhythm of Life, Some Enchanted Evening and Song of the Jolly Roger to Myfanwy, When the Saints Go Marching In and Soldiers Chorus.

Tickets are already selling well for the concert, which will feature about 230 singers.

Nelson Arion, formed 21 years before Steeton Male Voice Choir, is conducted by Keighley Vocal Union leader Frank Smith.

The Worcester choir is 100 years younger, formed in 1987 and now boasting more than 50 members following performances in Germany, Ireland and Le Vesinez.

K Shoes, based in Kendal, originally took its membership from the local shoe factory and now has 40 members.

Special centenary concerts are at Chatsworth House on September 6 and in the floodlit grounds of Fountains Abbey on September 20.

There will also be a tour of Ireland beginning on June 20 as long as the choir's usual programme around the district.

These concerts include St Luke's Church, East Morton (May 10), Holy Trinity Church, Queensbury (June 14), All Saints Church, Keighley (July 19) and All Saints Church, Ilkley (November 29).

The Steeton singers share the stage with Kidderminster Male Voice Choir on August 2 at Keighley Shared Church.

The annual concert at the Kings Hall, Ilkley, on October 18 will feature guests the Carlton Main Band.

The next concerts will be at Christ Church, Skipton, on March 29 and St Saviour's Church, Fairweather Green, on April 12, both at 7.30pm.

Both concerts will feature the choir's usual mixture of male voice classics, songs from the shows, ballads and Welsh hymns.

A spokesman for the choir said the Steeton group was one of the oldest and most respected male voice choirs in Yorkshire.

He said: "This year we celebrate our centenary with a choir that is thriving and singing as well, if not better, than ever."

The choir began when a dozen members of Steeton's Mechanics Institute came together as Steeton Club and Institute Glee Union.

Within five years they had come third in a local singing festival, then went on too many years of success in both competition and performance.
