Maybe three hours with just one interval had its longeurs and not all the music was utterly inspired.
But Opera North are to be congratulated on their immaculate timing of Gershwin's's second American musical about the absurdities involved in an election campaign.
It was superbly staged, sung and acted.
The warmth between William Dazeley and Bibi Heal as the ever-hopeful Wintergreens was a joy to behold.
Richard Burkhard as their eventual rival Kruger was also hugely impressive.
Jeni Bern as Trixie was always eagerly on hand to please the men, and what a pleasure it was to meet Stephen Beard again as the gormless vice president.
Forever the butt of mean jokes, his attempts to get the guillotine to work (to his own advantage) were shockingly funny.
With thrilling support from the orchestra and chorus under Wyn Davies, it is about an absolute must see.
