“Twelve brand new tracks of triumphant ska/metal mash up from the notorious Yorkshire oiks!” declares the cover of Inhale/Exhale.
Thoughts of what a ska/metal mash up could possibly sound like race through my mind and my curiousity is quickly resolved with the brass intro of album opener I Human.
If you can imagine Dexy’s meets Slipknot. Not easy I know, just think Rancid then.
The metal guitar and brass compliment each other wonderfully and musically Random Hand are quite brilliant.
The abundance of “wooo-wooo” backing vocals are rather endearing too but what lets the whole thing down are the lead vocals. Robin Leitch is far more metal than ska.
If this particular oik with the microphone would stop trying to fit too many words into a short period of time and resist the temptation to slip into a growl at times then Inhale / Exhale would be faultless - with the exception of Roots In The Crowd and Mass Producing Monsters (if ever an excuse was warranted for the skip button then these songs are it).
