Not many series are as unmissable in their ninth year as they were in their first.

But the ninth season of the Las Vegas forensics show CSI offered some of the best-ever episodes.

Among the most notable were those dealing with a corruption storyline that culminated in the cliff-hanging shooting of a series regular.

There's lots more to enjoy in this second boxset, even if the season was cut short by the US writers strike.

There's illegal dog fighting, a plague of flu, murders of grand jury witnesses, a dead toddler, bull riding, and an alleged alien invasion.

Unforgiven

Coronation Street's Suranne Jones hardly speaks in this three-part thriller but her performance as a cop killer released from prison is still captivating.

Living in a dingy flat she faces persecution at work, desertion by her boyfriend and vengeance from the sons of one of the victims.

She also encounters despair as she tries to trace her younger sister, adopted after the killings and told nothing of the crimes. The story moves slowly but is never boring, credibly building both tension and hopelessness before the bleak but gripping final episode.
