After the entertaining early episodes this swords-and-sorcery series developed into a worthy alternative to Doctor Who.

Merlin's special effects budget might not match the Doctor's, but the young wizard has a similar recipe for humour, action and adventure.

The characters are interesting, the performances sprightly and the plots a lot better thought-out than those of fellow BBC adventure Robin Hood.

This second volume, with the last six episodes of series one, is better than the first thanks to the development of an ongoing story.
