The biggest Wii release this Christmas initially appears a step back 20 years with Mario leaping 2D platforms in full Super Nintendo glory.
But it's an irresistible retro ride with super-slick gameplay offering many hours of pick-up-and-play, come-back-for-more fun.
Devilish but delightful level design, terrific new moves and powers, and innovative use of the Wii remote ensure it's more than just a recreation of Mario's past glories..
But it's in the multi-player modes that the depths of this title truly become clear, when up to four players can help or hinder each other's quests.
Although lacking in originality and not the best-ever Mario game, it’s ideal for all ages, playing solo or with others.
