The distinguished Northern Ballet Theatre is closing is 40th anniversary season with Christopher Gable's superb production in Leeds.
Nearly 20 years old, the ballet has become a classic thanks to the combined talents of the composer Carl Davis, choreographer Massimo Moricone and designer Lez Brotherston. And the present cast certainly did them proud.
Darren Goldsmith as Scrooge led the brilliant ensemble making up the familiar characters in Dickens' famous tale.
The Act 2 pas de deux, danced by Pippa Moore as Belle Fezziwig and Christopher Hinton-Lewis as the young Scrooge, was outstanding; the Cratchit family, and especially Hironao Takahashi as Bob and Jacob Cassidy as Tiny Tim, were a delight.
The 10-strong corps de ballet and partners was elegantly accomplished, showing up the comic shortcomings of Giuliano Contadini and Ginnie Ray as Mr and Mrs Fezziwig in the nicest possible way.
Altogether, the splendid Dickensian atmosphere, created by the scenic artist Dave Gillan, was a magnificent start to the festive season.
