Leeds's expertly enterprising orchestra under the Dutch conductor Jac van Steen brought Anton Bruckner's Seventh Symphony to Bradford -- a real treat.
But first we had Beethoven's Fidelio overture and Max Bruch's first violin concerto performed by a hugely dynamic soloist Chloe Hanslip.
The tone of her string playing was rich and powerful, her musicianship in total command.
In recordings and global appearances she has conquered the world and we could not have had a better taster for the excitements which followed the interval.
Bruckner demands massive orchestral forces and we were not short of these.
The power and beauty of the entire work was laid bare from the ethereal opening, through the intensely moving adagio to the shattering conclusion.
The composer's Eighth Symphony follows in Leeds Town Hall next month!
