The cyclo cross season for Bronte riders is coming to a close with just one Yorkshire Points Series event left.

This will determine who has triumphed as club champion, the honours going to the rider who has finished highest in the league.

The final Yorkshire Points event is on December 30 at Crag Vale park in Todmorden. The more serious riders will carry on into January, with the national events and championship still to be completed.

Attention for the club then turns to the social season, where the year is reviewed and celebrated and the next year is planned. The Bronte Wheelers’ annual dinner is held on January 24. This includes the presentation of club awards and trophies for those riders who have been in the various events throughout the year, including time trials, road races, hillclimbs, cyclo cross and the sportive rider award. There are also awards for those who assist with the running of the club and the most promising young rider.

This year, the club can boast a world champion in Brenda Tate, who took the honours in both the women’s 55+ sprint and points race, getting two golds at the recent World Masters Track Championships. Brenda also got silver in the scratch race to demonstrate strength in depth. Heather Sanderson also got on the podium, getting bronze in three events – the points race, scratch race and individual pursuit, Bradley Wiggins’ favourite track event!

Excitement is building within the club with the approach of the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire. The Brontes can count a Tour rider in their ranks, with Ian Moore who rode in the 50s and 60s and is still riding today.

Planning for events and activities next year is under way, with the club getting involved in various events in the build-up to Le Tour. Events include not only the usual Sunday club runs and time trials, but roller racing, bike maintenance and skills training. We are currently looking to hold these events at Glusburn Institute starting in the New Year and building up to the tour, linking with other planned events at the institute, such as a cycling film night.

Starting on Sundays in January will be our base miles club runs. These are the steady rides that include a cafe stop. Every third one will be suitable for those just getting into the sport or returning after a break. We will ensure no-one gets left behind.

There are a lot of advantages to being a club member, from being able to benefit from advice of older riders on technique and bike set-up, to discounted rates for British Cycling membership, club clothing and insurance. So if you are just getting into riding or want to improve, now is the time to get involved.
