The clocks going forward saw the start of the summer programme of events.
After a sunny and warm weekend, March 31 was the first Go-Ride kids club event down at Marley sports complex in Keighley which was well attended given the overcast and cooler weather.
Bronte Wheelers coach Peter Charlton led this first event assisted by Jon Ellinson.
The kids practiced skills including riding in a line and as a group, off-road cornering, and riding up and down slopes.
They also did some general fitness and endurance exercises and practiced fast starts which generated a little competition between the children.
First they were placed in groups of similar ability and the winner of each was handicapped for the next go, to give everybody a chance at winning.
The children seemed to enjoy this and there was no lack of effort with everyone going for it.
At the end there was a cool down and the last event was the slow race, which involved them riding the width of the all-weather pitches as slowly as possible without putting their feet down.
This method teaches them balance and bike control. There will be variations of this in the coming weeks.
Peter is currently planning the running of extra events at Oakbank School in the near future so keep an eye out for the dates or call Peter on (01535) 643184 for further information.
The next Marley sessions are on Monday and April 28, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. All are welcome, just turn up with bike, helmet and £1. If you haven’t got a bike and helmet we have a limited number we can lend out but you will need to call Chris Young on 07940 738362 to check availability.
The Sunday club runs are also taking on a summer feel with best bikes coming out of hibernation and mudguards being taken off to get that extra little bit of speed.
These runs are for anyone 16 years and above, and we meet at 9.30am at the Cliffe Castle roundabout at Keighley.
The next rides are this Sunday to Grassington and Burnsall, and on April 20 to Hebden Bridge via Trawden. The latter ride is a challenging one, with some steep climbs including one of 20 per cent and following some of the Tour de France’s route in reverse from Hebden Bridge over Oxenhope Moor to Keighley.
All are welcome. For more information contact me on (01535) 631373.
