The husband of Keighley Town Council clerk Miggy Bailey has died aged 70.

Brian, who died on Sunday, lived in Ilkley, and both he and Miggy had played significant roles in community events.

Tribute has been paid to Mr Bailey, who was a key figure in the revival of Ilkley Carnival and in organising the town’s annual summer festival.

He was also widely known in the area as a member of popular local bands.

Mr Bailey’s family says they have received hundreds of messages of support and condolences online. They said he was a family man who would help anyone and will be sadly missed.

Summer festival director, Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, described him as a “lynchpin”.

Born in Ilkley in February 1943, Mr Bailey attended Ilkley Grammar School, where his passion for the arts blossomed and he could be found performing in the school’s dramatics society.

As a member of the Sylvia Greenwood School of Speech and Drama, along with names such as Diana Rigg and Helen Weir, Brian continued performing at the Ilkley Playhouse and Wharfedale Music Festival, Otley Little Theatre to name just a few.

His opportunity to sing with a band came with the Tarantulas in his teens, which became well known in the ’60s performing at many local venues.

After a number of years Moldy Warp was formed, going on to become a popular local group.

His and his wife to be, Miggy, became involved with the Young Conservatives in the 1960s, for whom they organised many events. After marrying in 1973, his energies were directed to his printing business and his family, Annabel and Abigail and a lot later Alex.

Mr Bailey’s funeral will take place at Christchurch in The Grove, Ilkley at 11.15am on Wednesday.
