A campaign has been launched in Keighley demanding all the town’s workers be paid a living wage.
Outside London the living wage, which is calculated according to the basic cost of living, is £7.45 an hour.
More than 100 people signed a petition at Cliffe Castle gates on Sunday.
Judith Waterman, chairman of Keighley Labour Party, said: “A living wage for our town would make a huge difference, helping ensure those in work are able to make ends meet and afford their families’ living costs “We will need to work to win the argument locally if we are to secure more employers’ commitments to pay their staff the living wage and ensure their suppliers and contractors do the same.”
Luke Maunsell, one of the campaigners, said the response from the public had been “fantastic”.
He added: “It’s been great to speak to many people who feel this initiative would make a real difference to friends or family, as well as directly benefiting themselves if their employers did the decent thing.”
