A Keighley woman who has turned her life around by becoming a volunteer wants to give other people from troubled backgrounds a second chance.

Liane Feather, of Park-wood, said she has gone from drinking too much and being arrested by police to thriving as a successful volunteer cook at Cafe Hope in Central Hall.

She starts a one-year food diploma course at Craven College in September, and from this week, is spearheading a new Cafe Hope venture in the Temple Row Centre.

“I want to help other people like me change their lives, because everyone deserves another chance,” she said. “I’m a good example of that. I was always in trouble with the police, and last year I was bad with alcohol. Now, I’ve found something I actually enjoy doing and I’d love to be a qualified chef.

“I really enjoy cooking, though I couldn’t even make a poached egg before. I’ve loved every minute of my time here – I’ve learned so much and my confidence has grown. I’d like to train some new volunteers and give them an opportunity to do what I’ve done.”

Liane, 27, began working at Cafe Hope in January, after she overheard some volunteers outside Central Hall discussing their need for more workers.

Tracey Thomas, who runs the Alice Street-based social enterprise, said Liane has made so much progress she is to be put in charge of the cafe’s new operation in Temple Row.

The Temple Row branch runs from 9am to 3pm from Mondays to Saturdays. The original Cafe Hope will continue operating as normal.
