Worth Valley parish councillors have urged drivers not to obstruct Haworth’s historic Main Street.

They have warned that since the road’s setts were repaired and re-laid, there have no longer been any double yellow lines on the street, which has led to some motorists “taking the mickey” and assuming they can park anywhere.

Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council chairman, Councillor John Huxley, said: “There have been cases of deliveries that could not be made and problems with access to the church.

“In some cases, it’s poor parking, and in others it’s the sheer size of the vehicles. We do need people to be a little more considerate.”

Council vice-chairman, Coun Peter Hill, said: “We would ask visitors, residents and people working in Main Street not to block the road. People need to be sensible, especially when parking in the narrower part of the street.

“We’ve already had two funeral corteges disrupted so far this year, and I’d hate for that to happen again.

“There have also been workmen doing jobs who’ve been parking their vans on the pavement and blocking the shops – a lot of traders have come to me with concerns about this.”

He explained heritage organisations were reluctant to see the yellow lines brought back, as they would harm the popular street’s character and appearance.

He added: “We’re looking at options to propose to Bradford Council, which could include something like a ‘no waiting’ order, with the exception of those areas that have residents’ parking bays.

“However, this would require a Road Traffic Act which would cost £5,000-plus, and we don’t know whether the money would be forthcoming.

“We have to be careful we don’t take any current rights away from Main Street residents. But some people are taking the mickey and leaving their cars all over the place, simply because they can. It shows how valuable restricted parking is.”
