Keighley’s intrepid team of Mongol Rally competitors is preparing to head into Asia

The quartet, which began its gruelling 10,000-mile charity drive last month, has reached Georgia and is making for the port of Baku in Azerbaijan.

From there, the fearless four – Oakworth men Bob Jackson, Josh Chittenden and Oli Keighley, plus Long Lee resident Matthew Smith – will take a ferry across the Caspian Sea into Asia.

“There is no pre-booking here – you just turn up and hope a ferry arrives,” said a team spokesman. “When it does arrive, it may be a week before it leaves.”

The men, who left the UK in a 4x4 with 170 other teams on July 15, aim to arrive in the capital of Mongolia – Ulaanbaatar – by the end of this month.

They have so far raised more than £3,000, to be split between three causes – Sue Ryder, which runs the Manorlands hospice at Oxenhope, Macmillan Cancer Support and rainforest charity Cool Earth.

Before the start, the team – known as 4 Men 7 Brows – was judged to have the best-prepared car of all the competitors. Its prize was a gold-painted TV set, which is to be handed over intact at the finish.
