Keighley’s Victoria Park and Scott Street car park have been recommended as possible venues for public entertainment when next year’s Tour de France passes through.
The ideas were broached at a meeting hosted by Keighley’s Wetherspoons pub on Tuesday.
The gathering was organised by cycling enthusiast Frank O’Dwyer and attended by councillors and council officers, as well as representatives from Manorlands, Keighley Gala and the Bronte Parsonage Museum.
But Mr O’Dwyer said he was disappointed none of the supermarkets were represented on the night.
He emphasised the importance of keeping the thousands of visitors occupied in central Keighley next July, suggesting installing a giant television screen in Town Hall Square.
“Many people will come into Keighley, and they’ll spend money, which is a great opportunity for shopkeepers,” he added.
Councillor Tony Wright warned Town Hall Square offered limited space, and said Scott Street car park might be more suitable.
He noted that once the roads are closed for the race, people will only be able to move around using the railway. “We’ll need pooling areas for people to gather, and Victoria Park is only a five-minute walk from the railway station,” he said.
