The 8th Keighley (Cross Roads) Beavers, Cubs and the Cross Roads Brownies clashed on the playing field of Lees School a few weeks ago in one of the biggest water pistol fights seen for a long time. The Scout group also hosted a barbecue evening where Christine Weston, one of the cub leaders, was awarded her 40 year service certificate by district commissioner Jeanette Young. There was also another presentation – Cross Roads Cub Quinn Fisher was awarded the title Keighley District Cub Scout of the Year. When at camp the ten-year-old helped a fellow Cub who was feeling poorly by getting help. Quinn, who has attended the Cross Roads Cub pack for three years and is preparing to move up into Scouts later this year, was chosen from hundreds of local Cubs to receive the first Ron Powell Award. Quinn’s leaders Chris Weston and Paul Wilson put him forward because they believed he set a good example to other Cubs. Their citation read: “Quinn is well-behaved, he joins in activities enthusiastically, he is friendly to the other Cubs and he has shown that he thinks of others before himself.” Quinn’s family was invited to help at what they thought would be annual water fight and his dad, Darren Fisher, said: “It was a complete surprise when Quinn got the award. We’re really proud of him.” The award is in memory of Mr Powell, who died earlier this year after giving 50 years of dedicated service to the local Scouting movement.
