What seems to modern eyes an unexpected former sport was tunny-fishing, in which Scarborough featured prominently.
In September 1934 Keighley brothers R Hattersley Smith and H Giffard Smith went deep sea fishing off Scarborough and caught five tunny weighing a total of 3,151lb. The heaviest, at 798lb, was only 14lb short of the then record.
As the Smith brothers were directors of George Hattersley and Sons Ltd of Northbrooke Works, one of the firm’s lorries was utilised to bring their catch to Keighley, where it was put on display in Hattersley’s factory yard.
Most of the tunny was distributed among their workforce or sent to local hospitals. The rest was offered to the public for donations to Victoria Hospital. Some 500lb raised precisely 14s and 2d – a stark comment on the fabled generosity of those days.
This scene was recorded by freelance press photographer George A Shore, who had an eye for unusual stories.
