A Keighley mum who has lost several family members to heart problems is supporting a charity that funds research into preventing such conditions.
Andrea Shaw is taking the plunge with a sponsored parachute jump to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.
Her grandad, Brian Scott, who lived at Staveley Road at Ingrow, was the latest loved one to be claimed by cardiac disease. He died, aged 71, from a heart attack in January last year.
“One minute he was absolutely fine the next he was gone,” said Mrs Shaw, 25, of Glenhurst Avenue.
“Just the week before he’d been on the roof doing some work. He appeared to be perfectly fit. His death came as a huge shock.”
Her great uncle, William Hagan, died in 2007 soon after having surgery for a heart aneurysm, and two years later his wife, Ruby, fell victim to a heart attack.
“Because of the history in the family, and in memory of those who have died, I wanted to do something,” added Mrs Shaw, who has two young sons – Harrison, four, and three-year-old Stanley.
“I had a look on the British Heart Foundation website and decided on a parachute jump.”
She will make a tandem leap at a Lancaster airfield on October 6.
Her aim is to raise £1,000, and she has already coined-in more than £350.
The daredevil has done a parachute jump before, from a mountain in Turkey, but never from a plane.
“I’m excited about it,” she said.
“I like doing crazy things! I’ve done paragliding, abseiling, all sorts of things, but this time I wanted to raise money for a special cause.”
Mrs Shaw, who before having her children was a support worker for adults with learning disabilities, has a web page – justgiving.com/andie-shaw-skydive – where people can donate.
There’s also a collection box at her mother’s cafe, Anita’s Eaters, in Keighley’s Brunswick Arcade.
