Giant artworks by Keighley schoolchildren could be seen by millions of people during TV coverage of the Grand Depart of Le Tour de France.

Images in schoolyards would be seen from the air as TV crews in helicopters follow riders through Keighley district next summer.

Students could also perform dance and drama for the crowds as they wait for the cycle race to pass through.

Classroom work could be related to Le Tour, particularly by Keighley secondary schools that specialise in subjects such as languages or sports.

School projects were among ideas put forward by a group meeting in Keighley to make the most of the town’s involvement in the cycling spectacle.

Cycling enthusiast, Frank O’Dwyer, who chaired the gathering earlier this month, this week talked with a senior Bradford Council education officer, and will approach individual schools when the new term starts to further discuss the ideas suggested.

He wants to help schools tap into the £1 million fund for arts projects in the 100 days leading up to the July race.

Mr O’Dwyer said: “It’s a unique opportunity to put Keighley on the map, with 100 million people watching on TV.”
