A new cycling group plans to get dozens of Keighley children and parents out and about together on two wheels.
Cycle Keighley hopes to attract families whose interest has been sparked by the visit of Le Tour de France in 2014.
The world-famous race comes to Yorkshire next July, and the route will take in Silsden, Steeton, Keighley, Oxenhope, Haworth and Stanbury.
Groups behind Cycle Keighley believe the race will encourage both newcomers to the sport and those who have not cycled for years. They want to ensure people take to the roads in safety, and particularly want parents to accompany their children on rides.
Cycle Keighley brings together Keighley Healthy Living (KHL), Keighley and Ilkley Voluntary and Community Action, Bradford Council Youth Service and Keighley councillor Kaneez Akhtar.
KHL worker, Hannah Lindsey, one of the co-ordinators, said the project would be a ‘hub’ for a wide variety of cycling activities across Keighley.
She hopes Cycle Keighley will go ‘live’ in mid-September, with regular Saturday morning sessions at a secondary school.
Hannah said: “There will be a junior cycling club as well as cycling opportunities for adults to give them confidence.
“We hope to organise family rides. We want children to go cycling with their parents in the evenings or weekends.
“We’ve just run a successful summer camp with 35 children, and they’re geared up to join the club.”
Qualified instructors will teach the national Bikeability course, and organisers hope to build a collection of recycled bikes – repaired by young people working with charity Barnardos – that could be loaned out to people without their own bikes.
