The 812 Bronte Scenic Bus Tour will operate on this Sunday and Bank Holiday. Services are dovetailed to coincide with the arrival of the Keighley & Worth Valley trains at Haworth Station. The buses leave Haworth station at 1050, 1145, 1240 1400, 1455 and 1545 travelling to The Parsonage, Stanbury, Ponden, Scar Top, Moore Lodge, back to Ponden, Penistone Hill, Marsh Chapel, Sun Street and back to Haworth Station, where again it coincides, with time to transfer, with trains departing for Keighley. Ordinary Metro fares are charged and all concessionary passes are valid.

The Haworth Exhibition Trust makes small grants to assist students in further education who live in and attended schools in the Worth Valley. Application forms are available at the Haworth Medical Practice. The form explains eligibility and the destination of the applications. Closing date is September 27.

West Lane Methodist Church’s 30th anniversary mini-market on Bank Holiday Monday is from 10.30am. Stalls plus hot and cold food will be on the menu. The congregation, which meets in a former Wesleyan day school now known as the Grimshaw Centre, has been working hard for the past 30 years to pay its way and provide premises for community use. Admission is free though donations are always welcome. Next month the congregation will be taking part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support in the communal lounge at Thornfield, Station Road, Haworth.

The Haworth & Oxenhope District Bridleways Group’s forthcoming events include the annual show on Sunday at High Laithe Livery Stables, Oxenhope. Stanbury and District Women’s Institute were amazed at the adventures of Gillian Gill with Mingles and Marmite in various African and Eastern European countries, at her talk at the last meeting. Her work as a political consultant for the British Government involved training and helping organise elections in emerging democracies,which was an interesting and dangerous occupation. Other recent activities have been a visit to Wadsworth WI, near Pecket Well, to join in their August meeting, and another session of croquet at Ben Rhydding. On Wednesday, September 18, at West Lane Baptist Church there will be a fashion show by Edinburgh Woollen Mill at which all women are welcome. Tickets are £2 and can be obtained from WI members.

The Worth Valley Young Farmers meet on Tuesday evenings. This week they went on a farm walk at Tewitt Hall farm in Oakworth. The group were given a guided and very informative tour around the farm by Jonathan Sharp. The group also walked to the wind turbine and were given a talk on how it worked and why one was installed. Worth Valley First Responders are local volunteers trained by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, who respond to local emergency calls. Their aim is to assist and treat people who need assistance from the ambulance service until their care can be handed over to an ambulance crew. More responders are needed now. The Step by Step Dance School at Haworth Community Centre is taught by Estonian dance teacher and choreographer, Jevenia Pihel, who teaches the group fitness and dance for all ages and invites new members to come along. Haworth Riding For the Disabled is asking for voluntary help for a couple of hours each week on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursdays, 10am-noon or on Saturdays 9.15-1.25pm. Full training, insurance and unlimited tea and coffee will be given. Further information on (01535) 649448.

The Community Contact Point at 28 Changegate, Haworth, BD22 8DY, is normally open noon-4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with no Saturday, Sunday or Monday openings. Their answer machine will give contact details for the Police. The contact point are asking for volunteers to help distribute the bi-monthly Parish Council Newsletter – copies are free and are available from the Contact Point or online at haworth-village.org.uk. The Contact Point has a range of personal alarms, safe cans, and a range of free road safety information activity books, comics and stickers. Free low energy light bulbs are still available. The Contact Point collects used computer printer ink cartridges, old mobile phones and dead low energy light bulbs, which can all be recycled for the benefit of Manorlands Hospice. The light bulbs apparently contain valuable mercury. Drop them off at 28 Changegate, Haworth. Carelink befriending scheme can provide support and companionship to older people who live alone and do not have many visitors. Carelink can arrange for one of its volunteer befrienders to visit each week for a cuppa and a chat, or perhaps to take a short walk together. Volunteers are police checked and vetted.
