A golf day is being staged next month in memory of a 25-year-old man who died from meningitis.

Keen sportsman Austin Reeve was struck down by the disease in January, 2011.

Now his sister, Nikki Toon, is organising the fundraising open day at Riddlesden Golf Club on September 14.

People are invited to enjoy a round of golf for £5. And there will be live music and a buffet supper in the evening, with tickets also costing £5.

All proceeds will go to the Meningitis Trust.

Nikki, whose husband, Phil, is the club president, said: “My brother loved sport and fun, and I hope people will come along and support me in this event at a very friendly, welcoming golf club.

“The club is supporting me by making this an affordable event for all golfers.

“I want people to enjoy a round of golf and take time to visit the clubhouse, where there will be information available about meningitis – it could save a life.”

The event will also have special significance for club greenkeeper Andrew Heaton, who survived meningitis as a teenager.

The Meningitis Trust said about ten per cent of people who contract the disease die, and it can kill within just four hours. Survivors may be left with debilitating after-effects, including limb loss, deafness, blindness, brain damage, severe scarring, memory loss, epilepsy or learning and behavioural problems.

More than 42,000 people living in Yorkshire are estimated to have had meningitis, and this year a further 750 could fall victim to it.
