A woman has arranged a charity night of rock music, dancing and fun in memory of her mother – from Sutton – who died of heart failure.
Nicola Dobbie returned from holiday to find her mum, May Marshall, 56, had passed away, when she went to visit her with her two sons.
She has now organised a rock event to raise awareness and cash for the British Heart Foundation.
“I’d gone away with some friends to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks in aid of Macmillan. I got a text from mum on the Friday saying ‘good luck’ and didn’t hear from her again,” Mrs Dobbie said.
On the Monday, she took her sons, then aged one and three, to see her mum, May Marshall, at her home.
“We knew she had a heart condition. She had open heart surgery just before I was born and she got swine flu about eight years ago and it attacked her heart,” Mrs Dobbie said.
After that, every time Mrs Marshall had a cold or similar infection, it affected her heart, but nobody expected her to die, added Mrs Dobbie, 36.
Her mum died in June last year.
The mother-of-two from Baildon has now planned a charity rock gig with band Out Of Nowhere – a four-piece rock outfit formed in 2011. “They’re an amazing band,” Mrs Dobbie said.
“My mum wasn’t a cup of tea and cake type of person. She loved to dance and was the life and soul of the party. She was notorious for being the first on the dance floor and the last off anywhere she went, so it seemed silly to arrange a coffee morning or something.”
Mrs Dobbie’s event, Roktober, on October 19, will raise money for the British Heart Foundation’s Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, which is a fundraising drive by the charity.
Money raised will fund research into regenerative heart treatment.
The gig will be held at the Cooper Beach Club in Baildon, from 8pm. A raffle, with prizes including a signed England football shirt, restaurant vouchers, gym membership and a hamper, will also be held.
Contact Mrs Dobbie for tickets, priced £7.50, via roktoberevents@gmail.com or on 07813 327372.
