The Haworth Exhibition Trust makes small grants to assist students in further education who live in and attended schools in the Worth Valley. Application forms are available at the Haworth Medical Practice. The form explains eligibility and the destination of the applications. Closing date is the September 27.
Concert by the Military Wives Choir will be at Haworth Parish Church on Saturday, September 21. Tickets available from Nikky Carroll at Firth’s of Haworth, Top of Main Street, tel. (01535) 643800. Ticket sales are going fast and at this rate it looks as though they will sold out well before the concert. Proceeds are for Help for Heroes.
The Haworth & Oxenhope District Bridleways Group’s final Dressage Competition is on Sunday, September 8, at Lilyhall Livery Stables, Haworth (when the tests will be Intro A, P12, P18 and N28) and an organised ride on Sunday, September 29. Meetings are held at the Old White Lion, Haworth at 8pm, preceded by a Junior meeting at 6.45 pm. The group exists to safeguard bridleways and holds events to highlight these and help to raise funds for their protection and extension. The Worth Valley Horticultural Society set up in 2012 to organise a late flower and vegetable show was a great success, attracting exhibitors from a wide area. The show this year focusing on Chrysanthemums. Dahlias, Pot Plants, Fruit and vegetables, will be held at Haworth Community Centre, Butt Lane on Sunday, September 29th from 2 - 4.15pm. Entries will be taken until 11 am on the show day. There will be raffle tickets on sale and an auction after the show. Schedules are available from Mike Cunningham on (01535) 215141.
The Worth Valley Young Farmers meet on Tuesday evenings. This week they met at Holden park in Oakworth as part of their volunteer meetings. The club have previously assisted the friends of Holden Park in renovating an old pathway, and they returned this week to continue the project. Worth Valley First Responders are volunteers trained by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, who respond to local emergency calls. Their aim is to assist and treat people who need assistance from the ambulance service until their care can be handed over to an ambulance crew. More responders are needed now. The Step by Step Dance School at Haworth Community Centre is taught by Estonian dance teacher and choreographer, Jevenia Pihel, who teaches the group fitness and dance for all ages and invites new members to come along. The Community Contact Point at 28 Changegate, Haworth, BD22 8DY, is normally open from noon to 4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, with no Saturday, Sunday or Monday openings. Their answering machine will give contact details for the Police. The contact point are asking for volunteers to help distribute the bi-monthly Parish Council Newsletter – copies are free and are available from the Contact Point or online at www.haworth-village.org.uk. The Contact Point has a range of personal alarms, safe cans, and a range of free road safety information activity books, comics and stickers. Why not call in to see what they’ve got? Free low energy light bulbs are still available at the Contact Point. The Contact Point collect used computer printer ink cartridges, old mobile phones, and (this is a new one!) dead low energy light bulbs, which can all be recycled for the benefit of Manorlands Hospice. The light bulbs apparently contain valuable mercury, - but not ordinary light bulbs. Please drop them off at 28 Changegate, Haworth - opening times are listed above. CarelinK befriending scheme can provide support and companionship to older people who live alone and do not have many visitors. CarelinK can arrange for one of its volunteer befrienders to visit each week for a cuppa and a chat, or perhaps to take a short walk together. Volunteers are police checked and vetted.
