The Braithwaite Blitz ended with 250 bags of rubbish collected from across the neighbourhood.

Residents and staff from local agencies spent a day last week picking up litter from several ‘grot spots’.

They completed a clean-up that had begun earlier in the summer in the North Dean Road area of the Braithwaite and Guard House estate.

The Blitz involved several Bradford Council departments, police, landlord Incommunities, Community Payback and ward councillors.

District councillor Jan Smithies, who represents Keighley West ward, said: “We went litter picking in public areas, and we identified where there had been major dumping, and arranged for someone to pick it up.

“We found beds, sofas, a fridge, stool and a tent.

“We would have liked more residents to have joined us, but we did have a fair number of them.”

Coun Smithies was pleased nobody found any drug needles, and there were only a small number of alcohol cans or bottles. Lunch was provided for the volunteers at the Foster Gardens older people’s complex in Broster Avenue.
