A waiting room at Keighley railway station has been closed after thieves stole lead from the roof.

Extensive damage has been caused to the stone-built structure on the Leeds-bound platform.

The problem was discovered when heavy rain led to water pouring into the building.

A Northern Rail spokesman said the damage was being assessed and an evaluation carried out to determine the best way of repairing the roof.

“Unfortunately, the waiting room will be closed until further notice, and we’d like to apologise to customers who are inconvenienced by this,” she added.

“Colleagues at Network Rail are currently assessing the damage, which is considerable, and we are also working closely with the British Transport Police.”
