An inquest into the death of former South Craven soldier Gareth Thursby is due to take place at Oxford Coroner’s Court today.
Sgt Thursby, 29, was shot dead by a rogue Afghan policeman at Checkpoint Tora, in Nahr-e Saraj, Afghanistan, on September 15, last year.
He died alongside Private Thomas Wroe, from Huddersfield, when the pair went to assist an apparently injured man dressed in an Afghan police uniform.
The two men – both from the 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment – were repatriated with full military honours at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire.
Sgt Thursby was brought up in Skipton and was a former pupil of South Craven School, Cross Hills. He was married and had two children.
