I am responding to the letter by Anthony Smith, of the UKIP party, last week – Speculate on what effect ‘free movement’ will have (Keighley News, August 29).

While unemployment has been falling and the economy returning to strength, for many people it feels impossible because they feel firms will hire from Eastern Europe before they hire them. This is something more affecting our young people.

I have trust in David Cameron to assert himself again in Europe on placing limits on entry to UK to live and work. We cannot continue with Labour’s record resulting in a much increased population, strain on housing, schools and health provision.

Other European nations control their own borders and so should we. But to enjoy the benefits and trade in Europe, we must renegotiate Britain’s role in the EU, and this will take time.

The main cause of youth unemployment has been immigration from Eastern Europe. I believe they get the jobs that would have gone to our young. The rise in immigration numbers matches most closely the rise in youth unemployment more than any other factor. No matter how many new jobs there are, we cannot accommodate all who come.We must be careful we never blame the migrants’ efforts to better themselves. And it is clear, if you think about it, the issues are the same for everyone, as Kris Hopkins has said – just as for settled people in minorities like those from Pakistan, China and others as it is for native English people. Your children will find it difficult to find work because of this crisis. Instead, we must be patient and remember our government is limiting immigration now and, ultimately, we will have our say on Europe when they give us a referendum. Only Conservatives will secure our future for everyone in society. Does anyone want a UKIP/Labour Coalition? I think secretly only UKIP chiefs want that.
