Hundreds of youngsters learned how to steer well clear of some of life’s dangers at a three-day event in Keighley

Organisers of Stay Safe for Keighley Schools laid on seven interactive presentations for 380 year six children at Keighley Campus Leeds City College.

Scenarios included demonstrations on how to behave around dogs, how to put a casualty into the recovery position and how to be safe with electricity.

Dave Towers, from Keighley Work Safe Project, said: “We believe the skills we are teaching could help save a life, and at least children will be more aware of the dangers facing them on a daily basis and what to do to avoid them.

“Educating kids on these dangers is an ongoing process.

“The feedback we got from last year’s event was excellent. Teachers thought it was brilliant for the kids to see the college, and were also pleased this was being staged somewhere local.”

This year’s programme was led by Keighley Work Safe, but also involved seven other agencies and the college.

Tim Jickells, from Keighley Campus, said: “The tremendous feedback from teachers attending in 2012, the variety of scenario presentations and the behaviour of attending children convinced us of the value of the project.

“We are determined, if possible, we will continue to host it in future years.”
