A caring Keighley youngster has received an accolade for the help he gives to older people.

Seven-year-old Keelan Hussain was among the winners in Incommunities’ annual awards.

He won the Rising Star award for his work helping the elderly in his neighbourhood, walking their dogs, running errands and visiting them when they are ill.

Also among the winners was Crossflatts Over-50s Club, which was described as a “godsend to older people” when it was announced as victor in the Community Star category. It was also thought of as a “wonderful place to make new friends”.

More than 150 people attended the awards ceremony in Bradford on Monday. The scheme celebrates individuals and groups who brighten up their neighbourhood in various ways.

Overall winner was Jean Marshall, from Allerton, who also won the Star Neighbour category for her work with elderly residents.

Winners received a trophy and gift voucher.

Geraldine Howley, Incommunities group chief executive, said: “These awards put our many proud residents and unsung heroes in the spotlight and this year are extra special marking the organisation’s tenth anniversary.

“They show the inspiring contribution of so many people to ‘Improving lives Incommunities’.

“Congratulations to all our winners and all those nominated.”
