More than 400 people have now signed a petition to try to save Keighley’s under-threat Territorial Army base.

The campaign was started in July by Keighley town councillor Andrea Walker and a local Royal British Legion member. It is also being backed by Keighley deputy mayor Councillor Lionel Lockley.

The TA base, known as Keighley Drill Hall, has been recommended for closure as part of radical changes to Britain’s army reserve system.

The building is at the junction of Drill Street and Lawkholme Lane, and is home to C Company of 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.

Coun Walker said she was encouraged by the response to the petition, which has been made available for people to sign at Wild’s Cafe, in Towngate, Keighley Bus Station and Keighley Civic Centre. “I’d ideally like to keep the petition running into the autumn,” she said.

“People are responding to it very well and the last time I checked we had at least 400 signatures.”
